Consiglio per la ricerca in agricoltura e l’analisi dell’economia agraria

Italy

CREA (Consiglio per la ricerca in agricoltura e l’analisi dell’economia agraria, Council for Agricultural Research and Economics), is the first Italian research organisation with general scientific competence in agriculture, agro-industry, forestry and economics. Three Centres are involved in the project:

  1. The Research Centre for Vegetable and Ornamental Crops (CREA OF) is engaged in basic and applied research concerning the genetic improvement of vegetable species through classical and biotechnologal breeding methods. It has consolidated expertise on the identification of molecular markers associated to important traits, in genetic diversity studies and in the use of genomic tools. Research activities are also focused on the development of innovative management techniques to enhance productivity and yield stability by using organic farming. The Research Centre has a 20-hectar experimental field area; one hectare is managed in accordance to the criteria imposed by the regulation on organic farming in force (EU Council Regulation 2007/834; EU Commission Regulation 2008/889).
  2. The Research Centre for Engineering and Food Processing (CREA IT) mainly concerns the processing and preservation technologies of fruit and vegetables as well as the methods for assessing the quality of both the raw material and the final product.
  3. The Research Centre for Cereal and Industrial Crops (CREA CI) deals with multidisciplinary approaches to cereal and industrial crops for human, animal and non-food uses while guaranteeing the exploitation of productions through genetic improvement, conservation and management of biodiversity.

The three Centres have high performing metabolic platforms for the analysis of quality indicators of fruit and vegetables, both by the side of taste-active compounds evaluation, associated with sensory analyses (non volatiles and volatiles), and on the healthy potential, by the measurement of in vitro antioxidant capacity and the related phytochemicals.
